Cathy Bachner, grateful patient

Top notch medical care key to woman's survival

In December 2012, I contracted the life-threatening necrotizing fasciitis infection commonly known as the flesh-eating disease. Throughout the next two years, I have been blessed to live in a place where I was surrounded by excellent medical care. I use the word "care" with meaning.

My medical journey took me from the Emergency Room at St. Marys Memorial Hospital; to the ICUs of Stratford General Hospital and University Hospital. I remained on the recovery floor at the latter for two months and was served by twelve medical teams addressing my diverse medical needs and requirements for survival. Eventually, I was relocated to Parkwood Hospital where I underwent three weeks of rehabilitation to strengthen and regain my mobility.

Although the amount of time I spent in SMMH and SGH was relatively short, it was indeed critical to my survival. I was given the utmost care in both hospitals and encountered a complex web of medical professionals during my care. We are most fortunate and blessed to have such highly skilled nurses, doctors and medical specialists as part of our Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance.
