Stratford Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA) Chapter 69’s annual pancake breakfast fundraiser returns in support of local healthcare.
The fly- and drive-in pancake breakfast will be held at the Stratford Municipal Airport on June 7. Visitors can expect pancakes, peameal bacon, watermelon, juice and coffee with no fixed donation fee.
Over the years of the long-standing tradition, the volunteer-run COPA Chapter 69 breakfast has raised around $40,000 funds in support of the Stratford General Hospital Foundation. Bill Verellen, chief spokesperson for COPA Chapter 69, hopes to raise close to last year’s $7,700 total.
“It’s a great time and a lot of work, but very rewarding,” said Verellen. “Every year, our volunteers keep coming back, and I enjoy seeing everyone.”
The event will run from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., and he hopes to raise awareness among attendees about the value of services the airport provides. He said it is satisfying to see people come out and enjoy themselves while supporting the hospital foundation.
Funds raised from the pancake breakfast will go toward the foundation’s current needs. Cheryl Hunt, executive director of the Stratford General Hospital Foundation, said funds are used for a variety of equipment, including beds for the surgical services unit and supplies for the emergency department.
“There is a reality of donor fatigue, but our community continues to stand strong and support organizations,” said Hunt. “We’re very fortunate for the residents in Stratford.”
She values discussions with community members about healthcare improvements and being able to help motivate support. Hunt works with locals by assessing hospital needs and identifying how they can be fulfilled.
“It’s very rewarding to walk alongside a community member as they go through that journey, which can be very healing for them,” said Hunt. “Our community continues to support us, and we will definitely be engaging with them in the near future to share our focus for moving our hospital forward."
